Here at Lyme Bay Winery we always like to add a dash of history to our award-winning range of drinks, and the newest launch from our cellar door is no exception.

You may well be familiar with our Jack Ratt founding brand, inspired by a famous local smuggler from the South Devon coast called Jack Rattenbury. An adventurer through and through, Jack forged his notorious career in the 18th Century smuggling contraband into Lyme Bay using fishing boats called ‘Luggers’. Fast, agile and often painted black, under the cover of darkness these Luggers were almost impossible to catch – a fact that didn’t deter the dogged custom officers who were never far behind Jack and his band of fellow privateers.

With this in mind – and given the West Country’s smuggling history, our passion for making the finest, innovative drinks and the growing consumer appetite for aged spirits – spiced rum seemed like the next irresistible challenge for our team of winemakers, and what else could we call it but Lugger Rum.

Rum cocktails

Whether you like it straight up, with a dash of bitters or mixed in a rum cocktail, our Lugger Rum is the perfect accompaniment to an evening of tall tales and campfire camaraderie.

And for those of you who are asking is rum sweet, our Lugger Rum is not defined by an overpowering vanilla characteristic, unlike most commercial spiced rums. Instead, our aim was to create a rum that offers a full profile of spices. As a result, we’ve aged Caribbean white rum in bourbon-charred oak barrels right here in Devon before spicing it with nutmeg, orange peel and cloves, as well as vanilla.

They say what’s good for the soul is good for the body, and while we can’t make any claims that rum will guarantee you a long life, we like to think that it’s part of what kept old Jack Rattenbury going. In 1837 after thirty years at sea as a fisherman, pilot, seaman and smuggler he still had enough of a spark left in him to write down all his adventures in a book called Memoirs of a Smuggler.

In the meantime, if you’d like to place an order for some Lugger Rum, or any of our other delicious drinks, then we’d love to see you here at the Winery shop so do pop in if you are passing.
