February is traditionally the month when our thoughts turn to romance, but here at Lyme Bay Winery we think every day is a good day to show some love, and our delicious, award-winning products can help you hit the mark, just like Cupid’s arrow.
The aphrodisiac qualities of certain foods have been celebrated for centuries, and over the years science has unveiled some of the nutritional links behind the stories.
Mead has long been rumoured to have aphrodisiac properties and was historically presented to newlyweds to enjoy during what we now call their honeymoon. In fact, because drinking mead was thought to ensure a fruitful union bearing plenty of children, a bride’s father included a month’s worth of mead in her dowry.
Our prize-winning meads are fermented, blended and balanced on site using our secret blends of honey to create the rich, floral and pungent characteristics for which mead is famed. While we can’t guarantee the romantic results, we certainly like to think that our smooth and sumptuous meads will perk you up.
Sweet and juicy
Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, which helps protect cells and keep the body and its vital organs in tip top condition.
If you fancy putting some fizz into your step then our Strawberry Sparking Fruit Wine has a soft creamy mousse complimenting the delicate flavour of fresh, ripe strawberries.
Alternatively, our Strawberry Wine is a medium, well-balanced fruit wine with a delicate strawberry aroma. Best served chilled, or with soda and fresh mint for a longer refreshing drink.
Ever since Eve, humans have found it hard to resist the temptation of a ripe and juicy apple. Rich in antioxidants and dietary fibre, apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease – keeping you living, and loving, for longer.
Apples mean a lot to us at the Winery too. With cider our founding product, we are passionate about keeping the skill of Westcountry cider making alive and use nothing but the pressed juice of locally grown traditional cider varieties such as Dabinett, Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill in our traditional Jack Ratt range – named after notorious West Country smuggler Jack Rattenbury.
Smooth and sensual
Melting at body temperature, chocolate has long been considered a sensual treat, and dark chocolate has been shown to cause a spike in dopamine, our pleasure hormone.
For lovers of luxury, our award-winning Cream Liqueurs combine deliciously rich cream with oak-matured brandy boasting subtle notes of wood and vanilla to create a smooth, deliciously irresistible flavour.
Our Chocolate Orange Cream Liqueur is a deliciously orangey chocolate treat served over ice or splashed over ice cream.
For the die-hard chocoholic there’s our Double Chocolate Cream Liqueur, with delicious dark chocolate perfectly complimented by the warmth of brandy and the smoothness of cream.
A match made in heaven
And finally, where would any list of aphrodisiacs be without the heavenly pairing of oysters and Champagne?
With a reputation for boosting fertility, oysters are high in zinc and are known to contain amino acids that trigger the production of all the right hormones! As for Champagne, the bubbles in it – and other sparkling wines – are thought to make the alcohol enter the bloodstream faster than still wines, lifting our mood just like being in love.
Oddbins suggests oysters are a great pairing with a chilled glass of our Lyme Bay Brut Reserve English Sparkling wine, a great favourite with our customers and bursting with citrus and Granny Smith apple notes.
If all of this has got you in the mood for love then you can always place an order with us and we will ship your order out to you faster than you can say “I do”. We’d love to see you here at the Winery shop so do pop in if you are passing. Alternatively, you can always get in touch with our friendly team here at the Winery via email at email@example.com or by calling us on 01297 551355 if you’d like to order by phone.
