It turns out that people have been drinking wine even longer than we thought.

A team of molecular archeologists headed up by Patrick McGovern – Scientific Director of the Biomolecular Archaeology Project for Cuisine, Fermented Beverages, and Health at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia – has discovered wine residue on pottery shards from archaeological sites in Georgia dating back to 6,000 B.C. According to an interview with Dr McGovern in the New York Times, this is the earliest evidence so far of wine made from the Eurasian grape, which is used in nearly all wine produced worldwide.

Of course here at the Winery it goes without saying that we love wine, but this latest ‘fermented beverage’ news got us thinking about alternatives to our beloved grape-based drinks. Maybe it’s time to branch out from giving the same old bottle of wine for Christmas and impress your festive gift recipients with something they might not have tried before.

If we are talking about historic drinks then we have to mention mead. The golden liquor of poets, lovers and kings thought by many an elixir of health, fertility and longevity, we've taken the world's oldest alcoholic beverage and added festive spices to create a cracker of a Christmas Mead. Honey-rich and dangerously moreish, it makes a perfectly smooth and mellow Christmas tipple.

Lovers of classic Christmas fare will certainly warm to our fruity Christmas Pudding Wine. It doesn’t contain a silver sixpence but has everything else you’d expect from a classic pud – deliciously rich and so similar to Christmas Pudding it has to be tasted to be believed.

We like to think of it as Bailey's better-tasting relative – and our Salted Caramel Cream Liqueur is the perfect gift for anyone with a sweet tooth. We make it in small batches using the finest sea salt, luxurious caramel and rich cream for a subtle yet decadent salt-sweet taste.

We know that not everyone is a fan of winter time, despite the festivities, so we’ve got just the thing for those who yearn for summer. Surprisingly delicate and beautifully warming, our Raspberry Liqueur is made from delicious whole raspberries, sun-ripened and left to soak in smooth French vodka with a small amount of sugar to retain their fresh flavour.

You can take the pain out of choosing something for those hard-to-buy-for people on your list with our range of gift boxes of our most popular wines, liqueurs, beers and ciders. There’s our Lyme Bay Cider Gift Box with pint glass, the Annings Fruit Cider box with a selection of three ciders, or the Otter Brewery Gift Box which makes an ideal gift for fans of real ale.

We also have a range of wine and liqueur gift boxes, and at this time of year our Miniature Liqueurs Gift Box goes down a treat. It contains our winemaker's choice of five bestselling fruit liqueurs: Apricot Brandy, Ginger Liqueur, Elderberry & Port, Sloe Liqueur and Cherry Brandy, so whoever you give it to will be spoiled for choice… unless you decide to keep it for yourself, of course.

Many of our award-winning drinks are made in limited batches, so if there is something that takes your fancy then order now to avoid disappointment, and get your Christmas gift buying all wrapped up.

If you’d like to place an order then we’d love to see you here at the Winery shop so do pop in if you are passing.
